What To Do With Pecans For Sale

By Coleen Torres

Nuts in general are packed with nutrients. This includes pecans for sale. Native mainly to the southern United States, pecans are a type of hickory nut. They contain plant sterols, omega-6 fatty acids and antioxidants. A small handful eaten every day has been shown to lower cholesterol levels to the same standard as conventional pharmaceutical drugs. This sounds like a great excuse to eat pecan pie topped with butter pecan ice cream.

Biologically speaking, the pecan is a drupe and not a nut. A drupe is a type of fruit that has a seed surrounded by a hard shell, a fleshy medium layer and a skin. Unlike other drupes like the peach, apricot, cherry, plum, damson and nectarine, pecan "seeds" may be eaten.

The seeds from the pecan drupe have a buttery, sweet taste and may be eaten just as they are or cooked and integrated into recipes. Desserts are the most common recipes that use pecans but there are others. Native to the American south, pecan trees are also native to Mexico. The very word, pecan, means you need a rock to crack it. We do not know the Algonquin word for sledgehammer. The wood from the pecan tree may be burned and used for fuel to smoke meats. It is also used in hardwood flooring and in furniture.

The heart of Georgia's pecan production is Albany, in the southwest portion of the state. Other goodies to come out of Georgia include cotton, rye, peaches, timber, peanuts, hogs, tobacco and poultry. One of the world's best-loved soft drinks comes from Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia also gave us Gone With the Wind, The Dukes of Hazzard and former President Jimmy Carter and his beloved brother, Billy.

The heart of Dixie, Alabama, is also known as the yellowhammer state and also the cotton state. It is also a good source of pecans. Other gifts from Alabama are soybeans, peaches, peanuts and sorghum. Around 20 million people visit Alabama every year; of these, 100,000 come from around the world, mainly, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan. Workers from Alabama were responsible for building the rocket ship that first carried astronauts to the moon.

The northernmost state where pecan trees may be found is Iowa, the heartland of America. Other major products include corn and ethanol, but the state also products soybeans, oats, cattle and hogs. Non-agricultural sectors that bring in capital to the state are insurance and finance.

Louisiana gives us the New Orleans Saints, Mardi Gras, the Superdome and the praline, a gooey delicacy made from the blessed pecan. It also has a complex and fascinating geological history. With a strong French heritage, Louisiana models its electoral practices after those in France.

Two months out of each year, October and November, are spent preparing for the annual Pecan Festival. First, in October, the Louisiana Pecan Festival Beauty and Beau pageant is held to name a king and queen to rein over November's Pecan Festival. Between sixty and seventy thousand people attend every year. The amount of tourist dollars they bring in could hardly be described as peanuts.
